Plane Crash in China, Hypersonic Missiles in Ukraine, Heatwaves at Both Poles

AS #NEWSWORTHY AS IT GETS

🌍 WHAT: Temperatures are surging freakishly at the Arctic and Antarctic poles at the same time, and scientists are very, very worried.

❗️WHY: “They are opposite seasons. You don’t see both poles melting at the same time.”—Walt Meier, Ice Scientist, National Snow and Ice Data Centre, Colorado to Associated Press.

🧊 DETAILS: Parts of Antarctica are more than 40 degrees Celsius) warmer than average and areas of the Arctic more than 30 degrees Celsius warmer than average.

🚨 FYI: Areas around the North Pole are nearing melting point, which is really usual for mid-March. At the South Pole, it’s autumn; but, temperatures have risen to summer-January levels.

🧠 SCIENTISTS across the board have called this phenomena unthinkable, stunning, unusual, impossible, flabbergasting and a bad omen—words they’ve used in press interviews over the weekend.

🌍 THE CONCLUSION, scientists say, is that climate change is accelerating wildly, in ways humans have not accounted for.

IN HINDSIGHT

👉🏽 CONTEXT: Before the Centre scrapped the three farm laws in Nov. 2021, the Supreme Court had appointed a three-member committee in Jan. 2020 to engage with the agitating farmers and study the laws.

📄 WHAT’S NEW: The panel’s report is out. It had recommended that the three legislations should not be repealed saying they would be beneficial for farmers.

🖊 WHAT ELSE: The three-member committee also suggested changes in the three laws, including giving freedom to states to make Minimum Support Price (MSP) system legal.

🗯 The committee said in its report that a repeal or a long suspension of the laws would be unfair to the silent majority of farmers—86%—who support the laws.

📣 GOOD TO KNOW: The report was first submitted to the SC on March 19, 2021, but was not made public until now.

😶 The panel initially had four members; all had expressed their views in favour of the farm laws before the panel was formed. One member recused himself after controversy broke out.

RUSSIA'S WAR: LATEST UPDATES

❗️ On one hand, some experts say the war has reached a stalemate as it stretches to complete a month. On the other, Russia says it has used sophisticated hypersonic missiles (capable of carrying nuclear warheads) in Ukraine.

🇺🇦 It continues to bomb Ukraine as its troops settle into cities they seized weeks ago. Ukraine is holding down the fort, the best they can.

👉 Mariupol is in bad shape. 400,000 Ukrainians are stranded in the city, without food, water or medical aid as 'bombs fall every ten minutes'. Yesterday, Russia bombed an art school in Mariupol, where 400 people had taken shelter. The casualty count is unclear.

⏰ Talks between Ukraine and Russia continue, positively, but not fast enough. Ukraine's President Zelenskyy says he is ready to talk to Putin, but if talks fail, it could lead to World War III.

POLL KE BAAD

🏆 BJP leader N Biren Singh has taken oath has Manipur chief minister. BJP's Pramod Sawant has been unanimously elected as BJP's leader in Goa and will take oath as CM soon. In Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami has been given a second term as the CM even though he lost his own seat, Khatima.

SEARCHING FOR CLOSURE

⚖️ The family of photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who was shot dead by the Taliban last year, will soon move the International Criminal Court on against the terrorist group in relation to the matter.

CLOSING THE GAP

💉 The country’s top body on vaccination has recommended that a second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine Covishield can be given eight to 16 weeks after the first dose, at a time when cases have surged in China, Europe and the US once again. The Centre will take a final call on the recommendation.

THREE THINGS TO WATCH

👉 A Boeing plane carrying 133 people crashed in China. The casualty count is unclear, but first responders found no signs of life at the crash site.

👉 Kentucky senator Karen Berg’s passionate defence of why she voted no for a bill that would dramatically limit abortion rights, banning the procedure after 15 weeks. It's cathartic; highly recommend.

👉 Journalist and author Rahul Pandita sets the record straight on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990, amid the staggering amount of noise and untruths triggered by the release of The Kashmir Files. Just the facts, and a sincere plea. Watch on Youtube here.
